Male Privilege is telling me to smile.

Yes, I know it’s a lovely day. Yes, I know the birds are singing. In fact, yes, I am happy. I’m not smiling because this is my safety face. You may not be aware that women have a safety face. It’s the face that wards off certain jackasses from thinking I’m interested in having my walk derailed, as if I have nowhere to go, just because I DO think the day is lovely and the birdsong is nice and I choose to express my pleasure with all of that with a smile.

I will not smile for your pleasure, do not make demands of me, do not assume your asking me will brighten my day, my day may in fact be going along rather nicely. I choose not to smile because I have things to do and I’d rather not be bothered.

I’ve had this happen to me a lot, even as young as a child. I’ve always smiled for the strange men who’d ask me, too, and probably will if ever happens again. Not because I want to, but because I’m afraid of what might happen if I refuse.

Ok, I’m sorry but have to rant about this.

I’m coming back from a doctor’s appointment last summer. Long story short, I found a lump on my breast and my doctor had referred me to a specialist to get it checked out to make sure it wasn’t a tumor. Obviously, I’m not feeling all that great at the moment. I had my windows down because it wasn’t too hot out and I didn’t want to turn the air conditioner on. I stop at a red light and this car with two men in it pulls up beside me. I can fell this dude staring a hole in my face and I’m just praying for the light to hurry up so I can leave. This guy leans out of the window and says “Ay ma! Ma!” I turned to look at him with my “what the fuck do you want” face on. He says, “Smile for me babygirl. Everything’s gonna be ok.”

I couldn’t do shit but stare at his ass like he had grown a second fucking head. He didn’t know me. He didn’t know my situation. He didn’t know what the fuck I was going through. Who the fuck was he to 1) use terms of “endearment,” 2) demand that I smile for him, and 3) determine that “everything was gonna be ok?” When I refused to smile and turned my head, I heard this fool say “well be like that then,” like he had a god damn attitude. What kind of shit was that? This motherfucker didn’t own me and I didn’t owe him shit.

The sad thing is, that kind of shit happens to me and my mother every damn day! Wherever we go, we always get people telling us to “smile” and “be happy.” That’s just not the type of people we are. Just because we don’t walk around with shit-eating grins every fucking where we go that doesn’t mean we’re not happy. We may be having the best god damn day of our lives but we just don’t feel like smiling. I am sick and motherfucking tired of people acting like I owe them a god damn thing when it comes to my body. I’ll smile when I motherfucking feel like it. Demanding that I do so will only result in pissing me off and you getting cussed the fuck out.
