I think the bigger issue here is the fact that America seems to have a problem with African Americans who are in esteemed positions embracing any aspect of urban culture. The reality of the situation is Serena Williams won a gold medal for her country, and the neighborhoods in which she learned this dance move are a part of that country. Personally, I have a hard time understanding why any die-hard Olympics fan in America would be more concerned about her dance than they are about the gold medal she won for our country.

Wow this quote is so real. I think it unsettles white folks when black people who are successful embrace any marker of their blackness because we’re told over and over that blackness = negative and that whiteness = positive and we have to pretend to believe that to varying degrees to reach success in the first place… so when we reveal that we didn’t internalize the white supremacist hype that blackness is negative it throws the white folks off & they don’t have anything to do but rabidly say “she has no class” & “why is she so ghetto” because they have to in order to rationalize that whiteness is superior in their heads.
